Things to know about Hockey Alberta’s Spring Showcase

Eight months after the devastating fires swept through the town of Jasper, the community came together to host the U15 A NBC Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships presented by ATB, from March 20-23.

The strength and perseverance of the community was apparent during the exciting weekend. Everyone worked together to ensure that the tournament was a success and showed everyone in attendance how beautiful the town truly is.

Michelle Skilnick, Manager of Foundation and Events for Hockey Alberta, explains that “We are excited with our legacy plan, being able to give back to the community and those that want to play minor hockey … but also just showcase their town and bring back tourism to Jasper.”

The host committee welcomed guest to Jasper with heartfelt words, “at the beginning of this season, we weren’t sure if we would even have a hockey team. Now, here we are - sport is an essential part of rebuilding our community”.

While the host team opened the tournament by saying, “Jasper is a community that loves its hockey, and we are proud to host teams near and far”.

“A tournament such as this is so incredibly important to our community… (every team) will talk about their experience in Jasper, and that is what drives our economy,” said Richard Ireland, Mayor of Jasper.

“Jaspers big thing was to be able to bring back the economy to their town, show the resiliency of their town and the people that live there,” said Skilnick.

The fires devasted much of the community, including many of the Bearcat’s players. Hockey was able to be a small escape from the realities that they have faced.

Luka Kahlina, goaltender for the Bearcats, lost his home in the fire. Through it all, he found solace on the ice.

“When I played hockey I kind of just forgot about it,” he says.

Moment like these remind us why hockey is more than just a game. It’s a way to bring a community together, even in the toughest of times, it connects people, lifts communities, and provides strength even in the darkest times. The story of Jasper is an amazing example of that.

“The community gets together when we have to, hockey is just one of those things that keeps it together for us.” Says Paco Artiaga, Assistant coach for the U13 and U15 Bearcats. “The community is just beautiful.”

The parents of the U15 Jasper Bearcats shared their sincere appreciation as the tournament came to a close “thank you to all seven teams for coming to Jasper, for supporting our local economy, for your gratitude for the event, for your sportsmanship and your conduct in our arena and for the amazing hockey we all got to play”.

Hockey is more than just a game—it’s a community, and the Taber Golden Suns Athletic Association has continued to prove that through their Green Shirt Day Game, held this year on February 23.

The event was created three years after the tragic Humboldt Broncos bus crash, where Logan Boulet’s organ donation inspired nearly 150,000 Canadians to register as donors—the largest surge in Canadian history. This movement, now known as the Logan Boulet Effect, continues to bring awareness to organ donation across the country.

The Golden Suns partnered with Jan Clemis, a kidney donor recipient and dedicated advocate for organ donation, to start this event. Over the years, it has grown in impact, bringing the community together to celebrate life, honor donors, and encourage others to register.

This year’s event saw the Taber Highlanders U11 team join for the first time, making it even more special. “I was very interested but really had no idea what it would turn into and the success we would see as a result,” said Jamie Matisho, President of Golden Suns Athletic Association.  

The event marked the fourth annual event. They set up a table at the rink to answer questions, give out information, sell T-shirts, and take donations. The donations they get are split between the Canadian Transplant Association and the Logan Boulet Foundation.  

Bernie and Toby Boulet, Logan’s parents, attended once again, sharing their son’s story and answering questions at their information table. Through donations and merchandise sales, they raised $500, while the Golden Suns contributed an additional $800.

With green stick tape on every player’s stick and a sea of green in the stands, the support for this cause was overwhelming. The Mayor of Taber continued his tradition of attending, and many heartfelt conversations took place about organ donation and the importance of discussing your wishes with your family.

Two teams have been crowned champions over the third weekend of the 2025 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships hosted by ATB.

With the final two teams crowned over the weekend, the 2025 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships, proudly hosted by ATB, officially came to a close.

Congratulations to all the provincial champions and every team that earned their spot at provincials — what an incredible way to celebrate the game.

Championship tournaments took place across the province from Peace River to Okotoks, Jasper to Wainwright — bringing excitement to communities far and wide.

A huge thank you to the players, coaches, host committees, volunteers, officials, and fans who helped make the championships a massive success.

Provincials are over… now what? 

Although the hockey season might be over, there is still a lot of excitement to look forward to before next season.  

Spring Showcase:  

The Hockey Alberta Spring Showcase features three main events: The Alberta Cup, Alberta Challenge, and Prospects Cup. These events are held to showcase incredible athletes from across the province. Regional camps to try out for the showcase are held at for players to try out for the showcase tournament.

The National Aboriginal Hockey Championships:  

From May 5-10, both Team Alberta male and female will be competing in the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships in Kamloops, B.C.  

This event helps promote cultural unity and pride and celebrate the athletic skills of Indigenous players from across Canada. Players for Team Alberta were selected at camps held last August.

Spring Camps and ID Camps:  

AA and AAA Minor Hockey Associations across Alberta are hosting local spring training camps, providing athletes with an opportunity to showcase and sharpen their skills during the offseason.   

Spring camps are beneficial in developing and sustaining player’s skill, fitness, and mental fitness, ensuring players are prepared for next season.  

Hockey Alberta hosts many camps including Hockey Alberta goalie sessions, U11 goalie preparation programs, Female Goalie Camps, and more. These sessions provide specialized training led by experienced coaches to help players reach their full potential.

Becoming an Official:  

Becoming an official is an excellent idea to stay in the game at any level. It helps you stay active, learn more about the game, and contribute to the hockey community. It is also an excellent way to help develop leadership skills including conflict resolution, problem solving, working with others, and how to make decisions quickly.  

Hockey Alberta holds clinics annually from September 15 and November 30. We hold clinics to get certification at any level, except level 1. You must be 13 years old or older and complete the Hockey University Officiating online course and register for the Hockey University ½ clinic.

Winning a provincial championship is an incredible achievement—but winning four in a row is something truly special. For four young athletes and one dedicated coach, their recent U15 Female B provincial victory marked the continuation of an extraordinary streak.

Irma Minor Hockey Association’s very own, Ella Byrne, Wren MacKay, Emory Holt, and Ella Gulbraa, along with coach Clay Holt, have now won four consecutive provincial titles. Their journey started in 2022 with a U13 Female B championship, followed by another U13 Female B title in 2023. In 2024, they moved up to U15 Female A and captured yet another championship before adding the 2025 U15 Female B title to their impressive collection.

This remarkable group has demonstrated resilience, skill, and an undeniable passion for the game. Over the past four seasons, they’ve battled through tough competition, adapting to new challenges, and continuing to find success at every level. Their dedication to the sport and their commitment to their team have been key factors in their ongoing dominance on the provincial stage.

“Watching all the girls develop over the years is what I’m most proud of, and most specifically these four girls this year” shares Head Coach Holt. “During our first two championships, Ella G. and Emory were third-line forwards, while Ella B. and Wren were 4-5 defensemen”.

“Before I talk about this year, you should know that our 2023 championship had this same age group on it. From that year to this season, we lost 10 girls from the 2023 team—seven are playing AA, one went to a development team, and two pursued other sports. So, these four girls were specifically asked to step up, and they did in a huge way.”

Coach Holt went on to describe each player’s unique impact:

• “Ella G. has been small her whole life, so she has developed a very feisty game. If takeaways were a stat in our league, she would be far ahead of second place."

• "Emory is the natural goal scorer; she has soft hands and great feet. Coaching her (my daughter) was a struggle sometimes because she was always right, and I ‘didn’t know what was going on out there!"

• "Ella B. is the girl that coaches love to coach. Whatever direction you give, you get a head nod, and she goes out and does whatever was asked—without ever needing to be told again."
• "Wren was the biggest turnaround of all. For the first five years of hockey, she did not want to be on the ice. That was followed by a couple of years of wanting to learn. Then a switch flipped last year, and she became a beast on the ice—our towering shutdown and offensive d-man.”

Coach Holt also praised their ability to adapt to new roles, sharing, “Ella G. and Emory, who have been best friends since preschool, were asked to be our two centers—positions they had never played before. They finished 1-2 in league scoring, with Ella taking the title by one point. In provincials, Emory led the tournament, with Ella G. just one point behind. Wren and Ella B. became our top two defensemen, leading by example for our first-year girls. These four have won every year since they became provincial-eligible—four and counting—and I don’t think they understand how rare that is.”

Reflecting on the journey, Coach Holt also acknowledged the support from other mentors: “They have had several great coaches and assistants over the years. I’ve just been very fortunate to be the only one to share all four years with them.”

For the players, the experience has been nothing short of incredible, each speaking on how it has impacted them as players:

"I think it really sunk in this year just how lucky we’ve been to get to provincials for four straight years, let alone to win each time. Something that made this year just a bit more special for me is knowing how much my role on the team has changed from the first year to this year. I’ve grown a lot as a player since year one." - Wren MacKay

"Winning provincials for four years in a row has been an amazing and rewarding experience. Every year, it has been just as fun and exciting with all the different girls I’ve met and played with. I feel I have grown a lot from the first year and have become a smarter hockey player. A key to my team’s success is never giving up, even when you’re down, and keeping a positive attitude and mindset." - Emory Holt

"When I was younger, I didn’t realize how lucky I was to go to provincials, but now, especially after winning four times in a row, I’ve realized just how special and exciting it is. It’s something we can be really proud of. Every year, we’ve had a bit of a different team, but we’ve always been lucky to have a great group of girls—on and off the ice. I think that’s part of why we’ve had so much success. We’re always a close, dedicated team, and we’ve had great coaches. Over these four years, I’ve become a much more confident hockey player and have taken on more responsibility and leadership roles." - Ella Byrne

Four championships. Four years. One unforgettable run. Congratulations to Ella B, Wren, Emory, Ella G. and Coach Holt on an incredible accomplishment!

For 15-year-old Peyton Walker, hockey has always been more than just a game—it has been a source of strength, community, and determination. A native of Wainwright, Alberta, Peyton is a member of the Lloydminster U18 AAA Steelers. But her path to this season has been anything but ordinary.

Last season, Peyton played for the U15 Steelers with her dad, Scott, serving as team manager. Her team’s journey to U15 Provincials in Airdrie was a highlight—she fondly recalls the banquet, line dancing, and, of course, the competition. But just three days after Provincials, Peyton’s world was turned upside down.

After discovering a lump on her cheek and jaw, she underwent a series of medical tests—CT scans, biopsies, PET scans, and MRIs. The diagnosis was devastating: Stage 3, Group 3 Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

On April 26, she underwent surgery before beginning an intense 67-week chemotherapy regimen at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. For any teenager, such a diagnosis would be overwhelming. But for Peyton, the hardest part wasn’t just the treatments—it was the fear of letting her team down.

She had been set to move up to the U18 team in September and was eager to compete in her second Hockey Alberta Challenge. Knowing she would have to step away from the game she loved was heartbreaking. But true to the resilience that hockey had instilled in her, Peyton approached this battle like any other challenge—head-on, with determination and grit.

In July 2024, Peyton and her family traveled to Jacksonville, Florida, for two months of specialized Proton Radiation Therapy, a cutting-edge treatment not yet available in Canada. The grueling daily radiation sessions, combined with the loneliness of being away from home, made for an incredibly difficult time. But Peyton never faced it alone.

Five days after her diagnosis, a video message from her teammates and coaches poured in, reminding her that her hockey family stood behind her. It was a gesture that meant the world to Peyton—one she still replays on tough days for encouragement.

Her community continued to rally around her. Just six weeks into her battle, her teammates organized a charity golf tournament, bringing together over 200 golfers and 350 attendees. The overwhelming support allowed Peyton and her family to focus on healing rather than the financial strain of treatment.

Throughout her journey, Peyton has been given opportunities that have lifted her spirits in unimaginable ways. She has met hockey superstars like Connor McDavid, Darnell Nurse, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. She’s connected with Carla MacLeod and the entire Ottawa PWHL team. And between hospital visits, she found moments of joy at Universal Studios and Disney World.

But perhaps one of the most impactful moments of Peyton’s journey has been her advocacy work. She has become a passionate supporter of the Ben Stelter Foundation, which recently announced the construction of the Ben Stelter Facility for Proton Radiation Therapy in Edmonton—the first of its kind in Canada. Having experienced firsthand how this treatment saved her life, Peyton is now a fierce advocate for fundraising and awareness, ensuring that more children will have access to life-saving care closer to home.

Peyton recently underwent scans and completed her fourth round of maintenance chemotherapy. While Peyton’s scans are looking promising, she continues treatment with hope and determination, knowing that the finish line is in sight.

Through it all, Peyton has remained an inspiration. She never let losing her hair dim her confidence. She never allowed her diagnosis to define her. And she never made excuses—she simply fought, just as she always has on the ice.

Now, she balances treatment with her love for the game, staying with a billet family in between chemotherapy sessions while attending morning practices, afternoon workouts, and team activities. Her teammates don’t treat her differently, and she wouldn’t want it any other way.

As she sets her sights on returning to full competition in the fall, Peyton has one goal in mind—to battle her way back to the ice and chase an Esso Cup championship.

Her message to others facing challenges is simple:

“Find the courage and determination to accomplish your goals, and don’t be afraid to lean on your teammates when you need them.”

The 2024-25 minor hockey season made history with the inauguration of the U11 AA league. This decision came after the positive feedback received from the two-season long U11 Hockey Alberta Pilot project. This project explored the top U11 hockey in Alberta and came back with excellent results.

This season was composed of 48 teams consisting of talented U11 players from across the province. The goal of creating this level was to bridge the gap between tiered and elite hockey.

“The U11AA League was created to allow the progression of our players, coaches, and officials at the developmental level, filling a void between Tiered and Elite Hockey. One of the most memorable moments throughout the season was the U11 AA Showcase in January, where we saw 47 teams from across the province come together. This showcase was a pivotal moment in which we witnessed teams really excel as they were matched up against similar skill in competition,” said Dana Henfrey, Chair of the U11AA Committee.

The excitement of this historical season was felt throughout the hockey community.

“The first year of the official U11 AA Hockey League has been exciting to watch unfold,” said Morgen Kidney, Hockey Alberta Minor Leagues Coordinator. “The buy-in has been fantastic and development is the primary focus.”

The division was filled with strong athletes and great hockey that made the inaugural season very exciting to experience. The top eight teams made their way to the U11 AA Provincial Championships hosted in Strathmore by the Wheatland Hawks.

“Post-showcase, we have really noticed the competitive sportsmanship of teams leading into Playoffs, with teams earning the right to represent their division at the very first U11 AA Hockey Alberta Provincial Tournament. All in all, this inaugural season can be measured in success by the abundance of smiles on the players’ faces that we’ve seen at the arena,” said Henfrey.

This first showing of this age group’s talent was as incredible as expected.

“The teams that have made it here have persevered and put in the hard work, and it (was) an entertaining weekend filled with great hockey,” said Kidney.

All the teams fought their way through the tournament with grit and determination. On Sunday, semi-finalists battled to win their spot in the championship game. The semi-final A game consisted of the Lakeland Panthers and the Wainwright Polar Kings, sending the Polar Kings to the championship game with a 4-1 win. The semi-final B game was played by the Lethbridge Hurricanes and the Red Deer Chiefs, ending in a 6-3 final sending the Hurricanes to the championships.

The Provincials Championship game was fought hard by both teams. In a 6-3 final, the Lethbridge Hurricanes became the first ever U11 AA Provincial Champions.

“I have been able to watch the development within this league all season, and it has culminated with some of the very best competing this Provincial weekend. I am awestruck to watch the talent and skill that truly defies the age of these players,” said Henfrey.

“I couldn’t have asked for anything more exciting or worthy of an inaugural Provincial weekend! Congratulations once again to the Lethbridge Hurricanes, our first ever U11AA Provincial Champions.”

Ridly Greig’s journey through hockey is defined not only by his skill on the ice but also by his relentless determination and leadership. Known for his gritty play, Greig brings an unmatched intensity to every game; Greig’s work ethic and passion make him a standout both on and off the rink.

“Ridly does an amazing job balancing a smart, skilled game with a hard, gritty, physical approach.  You know when he is on the ice, and if you don’t, it won’t take long; he can make an impact either on the score sheet or with a big hit. Off the ice, he is a great teammate who quietly goes about his business. He was a pleasure to coach, and I really enjoy watching him have the success he is experiencing- very well deserved.”

RED DEER – Hockey Alberta has named the 120 athletes who will represent their regions at the 2025 Alberta Cup.

Two teams from each of the North, Central, and South regions will face off against each other in a modified round-robin tournament taking place in Red Deer at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre from April 23 to 27. Teams are comprised of the top male athletes from across the province, with each of the six teams roster including two goaltenders, six defencemen, and 12 forwards.

Athletes gathered at three Regional Camps over the weekend (March 28-30) in Calgary, Red Deer and Spruce Grove. Male players born in 2010 who participated in Hockey Canada-sanctioned programs this season were eligible to try out.

“There were a lot of very talented kids from across the province who tried out for the Alberta Cup program,” said Blake Cosgrove, Hockey Alberta’s Manager of Elite Hockey Development. “While the Alberta Cup’s focus is player development, it is also a great opportunity to evaluate players for our U16 Team Alberta. We are very excited for this 2010 age group to showcase themselves at the Alberta Cup and future Hockey Alberta events.

The Alberta Cup Provides players and staff with an opportunity to experience elite-level play in a short-term competition and is part of the player evaluation process for selecting Team Alberta to compete at the WHL Cup in October.

The Alberta Cup aids in the identification and selection of potential players for Hockey Alberta’s Team Alberta program, with hundreds of players annually trying out for 120 spots (20 positions on each of the six regional teams). In addition to player development, the Alberta Cup also features opportunities for administrators, referees, coaches, therapists, and equipment managers to be identified for potential positions at higher-level events such as the World U17 Hockey Challenge.

TBS, in partnership with Hockey Alberta, will be running a pre-event online store. A variety of merchandise items are available for purchase, with the deadline to place your order ending at 11:00 pm on April 8th in order to receive your merchandise by the Alberta Cup. Online orders placed by the deadline will be delivered to the event for pickup at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on April 24. ATHABASCA - The U15-2 Athabasca Hawks hosted provincials from March 20-23, making their opening ceremonies on March 21 extra special with a powerful drumming circle performed by students from the Calling Lake Drum Club.

One of the players from the Hawks, Aidyn Jackson-Favel, stepped up to perform in the ceremony dressed in his full hockey gear. Alongside Aidyn, players from other U15 teams, Evan Johnson U15-3 and Jacobi Lightning U15-1 performed as well.

“The community was touched because he was one of our very own,” said Michelle Cummings, Host Chair for the U15C Provincials.

Drums are sacred amongst Indigenous communities, representing the “universal heartbeat of mother earth”. Playing a special rhythm promotes healing and realignment of the four realms of human existence.

With two Indigenous players on their roster, the Hawks felt it was important to celebrate and share this tradition during their opening ceremony.

“Everyone seemed to enjoy the drummers. We had many compliments on how well they did and how much they enjoyed them,” said Cummings.

This event was inspired by a U18 team performing a drumming circle during the 2023 provincials. This U18 event featured adult drummers, but having theirs including kids from the community seemed to make a huge impact.

“I think including the kids was extra memorable,” said Cummings. “It’s such a neat sound and to have children play for a children’s event.”

The ceremony left a lasting impression on everyone in attendance, celebrating both sport and culture in a truly unforgettable way.

Hockey Alberta remains committed to supporting mental health by providing resources for anyone seeking guidance—at any level of the game. In an event of an injury, players know to seek medical treatment, but it is not often that they realize they may need mental health intervention as well.

Mental wellness in sport can mean many things. It can be seen as, “the ability to regulate your thoughts, feelings, and behaviours and act in a purposeful manner while coping with the many stresses placed on you,” says Barry Medori, Manager of Coach Mentorship.

Project 11: A Mental Health Education Initiative

One of the programs making a difference in mental health awareness is Project 11, a mental health education program for students from kindergarten through to grade 12. It was spearheaded by the Winnipeg Jets and the Manitoba Moose, in honour of Rick Rypien. Rypien often spoke about his want to make mental health supports more available to children after experiencing his own mental health struggles.

A strong mind is just as crucial as a strong body in hockey. It is important for minor hockey players to focus on their mental health so they can focus on all aspects of the game, as well as their personal life. We are dedicated to fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where all athletes can thrive; both on and off the ice. Your mental fitness plays a huge role in how you can show up for your team and your community.

Mental health struggles can affect an athlete’s sleep, concentration, and can contribute to performance issues. The stigma around mental health and athletes can lead to people not speaking out when they need help.

“Sports, like hockey, are not removed from the impact they can have on creating positive mental health for their athletes,” said Carlia Schwab, Manager, EDI and SafeSport.

“While participation in sports can provide opportunities for youth mental health and wellness to be challenged, sports can also be the space where youth learn resilience, practice self-care and connect with others.”

It is important to have a support system in place for your team, child athlete, or for yourself to ensure that every athlete can be at their best. Whether you’re a player, coach, or parent, we encourage you to explore these tools and use them whenever needed. Hockey Alberta has a list of resources available on their website under the ‘players’ section.

“I believe that hockey in Alberta is in the perfect position to support the development of grounded and resilient youth athletes by providing the tools and skills to manage mental health and work through adversity,” said Schwab.

Asking for help does not make you weak. It does not define your capabilities as an athlete. Instead, it demonstrates courage, self-awareness, and the commitment to be the best version of yourself.

We are committed to creating a safe space for all athletes and provides much-needed resources for their athletes. We want to ensure that there is an equal, diverse, and inclusive environment to give the athletes the opportunity to thrive as a player.

MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES >

The Town of Crossfield and the Crossfield Arena are calling on Albertans for support as they compete to be crowned Kraft Hockeyville 2025. With a grand prize of $250,000 in arena upgrades and the opportunity to host an NHL pre-season game, the stakes are high, and community participation is crucial.

Voting begins Thursday, April 4, at 7:00 AM (MT) and closes on Friday, April 5, at 3:00 PM (MT). Unlike traditional voting processes, Kraft Hockeyville allows for unlimited voting, meaning supporters can cast their votes as many times as possible to help Crossfield secure the win.

A Chance to Make History

If successful, Crossfield would become only the second Alberta community to win the competition. The last and only Alberta winner was Sylvan Lake in 2014, which used the prize money to build a new arena and hosted a pre-season game between the Arizona Coyotes and Calgary Flames.

What does Hockeyville mean to me?

Kraft Hockeyville has been, and continues to be, an incredible showcase of what the arena means to the community. The Pete Knight Arena is truly the hub of our little town. Friday, Saturday, and Sunday night games are often packed houses as everyone comes to cheer on our teams and even come and cheer on teams from our neighboring towns.

The way the town came together for our bid for Kraft Hockeyville has been remarkable. It seems like everyone from town and the surrounding area had a story to tell about their childhood there. The rink brings families together and creates new bonds that last a lifetime.

Crossfield is a wonderful mix of people who have been here for generations, and brand-new families from the cities looking for the benefits of living in a small town. Whether your parents were Icehawks, or you’re the first one, the Pete Knight Arena becomes your home away from home for the hockey season, complete with hockey aunts and uncles looking out for you, helping you if you get hurt, and even buying you a snack if you get hungry and your parent is coaching.

Kraft Hockeyville will make a huge difference by improving our kids experience in the changerooms, and by improving accessibility. The Pete Knight Arena and Crossfield Minor Hockey strive to welcome anyone and everyone, and the more our facility can do that, the better.

Crossfield is a close-knit community built on strong values of teamwork, dedication, and local pride. Hockey plays a vital role in Crossfield; it is one of the few winter sports available to our youth that is right in town. What does Hockeyville mean to you and your association?
To my family that uses the arena 6 days a week, Hockeyville means ensuring their aging grandparents can continue to watch them play the sport they love most for years to come by creating a more accessible facility. It also has created a huge sense of pride and community for people of all ages in Crossfield. It’s the talk of the town! For our association it means we could act on arena upgrades in the dressing rooms, concession area and perhaps a new score clock ensuring the longevity of our arena for many years to come as Crossfield’s population grows so the arena can be the hub it is for our town people and all surrounding towns, as well, that use our arena weekly.

Tell us about Crossfield and hockey:
Crossfield is a quiet little community just north of Airdrie. People come here to escape the noise, traffic and lights of the cities. We help our neighbors; we look out for each other, and we all cherish the small town atmosphere.

Hockey is big in Crossfield. 1/3 of elementary school aged children play hockey in our community. Registration fees are kept low to make the sport accessible to all and once you join hockey, you find your hockey family. Spending anywhere from 5-6 days a week at the rink is the norm, traveling to neighboring towns, out of town hockey tournaments, hosting our own home tournaments, the sense of community hockey brings to players, parents and siblings generates memories these kids will hold onto for years to come and a sense of purpose and pride to be a Crossfield Icehawk!

For Michael Hay, hockey is more than just a sport—it’s a way to build lifelong skills, create unforgettable memories, and foster a strong sense of community. As the President of Canmore Minor Hockey, Hay is passionate about making the game accessible to as many kids as possible.

“Canmore is an amazing place; all of our kids are not just hockey players but they are athletes and the hockey part of it just continues to grow and grow.” Hay shares. “We run many, many programs with Canmore Minor Hockey just to be able to grow the game.

One of those opportunities took place at Hockey Day in Canada, where Hay spoke about the importance of events that help introduce kids to the sport. “Trying hockey for the first time can be scary,” he explains. “You get them out there, you get them having fun, and all of a sudden, it’s not scary anymore. They want to play the game, and it’s important to grow that game.”

Hay grew up playing hockey himself and understands the impact it has beyond the rink. He believes the lessons learned in hockey—both in games and in practices—build a strong foundation for life.

“The things you learn in hockey, in the game, in practices, and being with your teammates, it creates a ‘hockey for life’,” Hay says. “It creates wonderful memories. It creates great exposure to teamwork. Great exposure to challenges. Great exposure to success and how to handle all that.”

His belief in the game’s ability to shape young athletes is unwavering. “I am a firm believer, we all are in the game, that if you play the game of hockey, you are building structure and you are building things for your future.”

Through his leadership with Canmore Minor Hockey, Hay continues to make an impact, ensuring young players feel welcomed, supported, and excited to be part of the game. With the help of their community Canmore Minor Hockey was named Hockey Alberta’s Minor Hockey Association of the year in 2023-2024. Canmore continues to provide a fun and positive environment for players which is directly aligned with the vision and mission of Hockey Alberta.

March 15, 2025 - During the 2024 Hockey Alberta Provincial Championships presented by ATB, Hockey Alberta introduced the Player Pledge initiative, a commitment to fostering a positive hockey culture. Today marks the one-year anniversary of this impactful initiative, celebrating the progress made in creating a more inclusive and respectful environment for all participants in the game.

“I’m very proud of the Player Pledge initiative. I know that it takes time for change to be seen, but I believe programs like the Player Pledge create valuable opportunities for our athletes and teams to become active and engaged participants in this change” Carlia Schwab, Manager, EDI and SafeSport declares.

Schwab explains that by “launching the Player Pledge at the 2024 Provincials [it] allowed us to challenge some of our greatest leaders and top teams to become part of the solution. Role-modeling for others the importance of inclusion, welcoming spaces, and being a good teammate. Encouraging others to join in.”

The Player Pledge was launched to reinforce Hockey Alberta’s objective of ensuring hockey remains a sport where all players, coaches, and families feel safe, welcome, and valued. It serves as a reminder that the words and actions of individuals can shape the experience of everyone involved. This year, we made a deliberate change from "It starts with me" to "It starts with us," shifting the pledge’s wording to include "we" and "us". This adjustment emphasizes a stronger team-driven call to action, reinforcing the importance of collective responsibility in fostering a positive hockey culture.

The Player Pledge

We recognize that inclusive and respectful hockey starts with us. We pledge to:

• Be AWARE of the language we use and how it impacts others.

• ACKNOWLEDGE everyone’s differences regardless of the jersey they are wearing.

• COMPETE HARD while leading positive and RESPECTFUL interactions with others.
• Be an ALLY by contributing to safe spaces where everyone feels welcome.

Building on the success of the initial launch, the 2025 Player Pledge campaign began in January with an exciting new addition: the Online Player Program. This program allowed teams to take their commitment a step further by engaging in online resources and discussions that promote inclusivity, respect, and sportsmanship. By integrating digital tools, Hockey Alberta provided teams with the opportunity to reflect on their role in shaping the culture of the game and enhancing the overall experience for all participants.

“My hope is that the Player Pledge can continue to empower and motivate our young athletes to think of Hockey as not just a game to play but as a safe space to grow, to build friendships, strengthen resiliency, foster leadership and teamwork, and to learn how to become safe and respectful contributors in our communities” Schwab shares her hopes on continuing the pledge.

Here are 10 essential tips for hockey parents to help navigate Provincials with confidence.

1. Stock up on Essentials

Hockey tournaments can be unpredictable, and the last thing you want is to be scrambling for forgotten items. Before you leave, make sure your player takes inventory of their gear to ensure everything is packed. Pack extra hockey tape, spare skate laces, water bottles, jerseys, and team apparel. Having these items on hand can save you from unnecessary stress, especially if something goes missing or breaks during the tournament.

2. Keep Perspective

While winning is always exciting, it’s important to remember that Provincials are about more than just the final score. The focus should be on effort, teamwork, and growth. Encourage your player to:

✔ Celebrate their achievements, no matter how big or small
✔ Stay positive and support teammates
✔ Handle both victory and defeat with grace
✔ Learn from each game experience

Teaching kids to enjoy the game and embrace the challenges will help them develop lifelong skills, both on and off the ice.

3. Remember the Small Stuff

Stocking up on the basics is key, but don’t overlook the little things that can make a big difference:

✔ Cold weather gear – Some rinks can be chilly, so pack blankets, gloves, and warm layers.
✔ First aid essentials – Band-aids, blister pads, and muscle rub can come in handy.
✔ Portable phone charger – You’ll be taking photos, checking schedules, and communicating with other parents throughout the day. A dead phone battery is the last thing you need!

A little extra preparation can make the weekend much smoother for everyone.

4. Encourage Good Nutrition and Hydration

Hockey players exert a lot of energy during tournaments, and proper nutrition plays a big role in their performance. Since Provincials can often involve multiple games in a short period, hydration and balanced meals are essential.

Tips for keeping your athlete fueled:

✔Pack healthy snacks like granola bars, fruit, protein bars, and nuts.
✔ Always keep a full water bottle on hand—staying hydrated is essential, even off the ice! You can also pack a Gatorade to help replenish electrolytes and prevent dehydration.

✔Encourage balanced meals with protein, healthy carbs, and vegetables to sustain their energy.

Avoid loading up on sugary snacks or fast food, as it can lead to crashes in energy levels.

5. Help Them Stay Focused and Positive

Big tournaments can bring big emotions. Whether your player is feeling excited, nervous, or even overwhelmed, your support can help them stay mentally strong and focused.

Ways to help your player stay in the zone:

✔ Encourage positive self-talk (e.g., “I’ve got this,” “One shift at a time”).
✔ Remind them to focus on what they can control – effort, attitude, and teamwork.
✔ Keep post-game conversations positive – ask them what they enjoyed, rather than critiquing every play.
✔ Remind them that nerves are normal – it means they care!

6. Respect Coaches, Officials, and Other Parents

Hockey is an intense, high-energy sport, and emotions can run high at Provincials. However, it’s crucial to set a positive example for young athletes.

Respect the referees – They make the calls to the best of their ability.
Support the coaches – They put in a lot of time and effort for the team.
Encourage players – Cheer them on, even during tough moments.
Be respectful to other parents – Remember, everyone is there to support their child.

Sportsmanship extends beyond the rink, and creating a respectful, supportive environment benefits everyone involved.

7. Plan your Schedule

Provincials can be a whirlwind of games, team events, and travel. Planning ahead can help you make the most of your trip.

Know the schedule – Keep track of game times, locations, and any team activities.
Plan your travel – Allow extra time for road delays, parking, and unexpected changes.
Explore your host city – Check out local attractions or restaurants during downtime.
Check the weather – This can affect travel plans and outdoor activities.

A little preparation goes a long way in reducing stress and maximizing enjoyment.

8. Capture the Memories

Provincials are a special milestone in any hockey season. Take the time to capture the moments so you can look back on them for years to come.

Snap photos and videos – Pre-game huddles, goal celebrations, and team moments are all worth remembering.

Opportunities for Girls and Women in Alberta: As Players, Coaches, and Officials

As we celebrate International Women’s Day on March 8, it’s the perfect time to recognize the incredible growth of girls and women’s hockey in Alberta and across Canada. In the past five years, girls hockey registration has grown by 15.5%, contributing to the overall increase in Canada where female hockey participation has grown and eclipsed 100,000 participants for the first time ever in the 2024-2025 season.

Hockey Alberta is a national leader in female participation with the second highest total registrations, behind Ontario, with 11,471 registered girls playing the sport which makes up 19% of hockey players in Alberta are girls and women. Within Hockey Alberta women & girls can progress from grassroots programs like Try Hockey events all the way to U18 AAA in the Alberta Female Hockey League (AFHL) and compete for Team Alberta.

Recognizing the rapid growth of the female game, Hockey Alberta announced the expansion of three new teams for the 2025-2026 season. Since the implementation of the AFHL model in 2016, registration numbers for female players in Alberta have surged by 32% overall, including: 

• 36% growth at the U15 level 

• 52% increase at U13 

• 62% increase at U11 

For those looking to continue their hockey journey beyond minor hockey, opportunities extend to the ACAC, U Sports, NCAA, and PWHL.

The impact of women in the game goes far beyond playing. Alberta has seen a significant growth in coaching, officiating, and volunteer participation, further strengthening the girls & women’s hockey community. We have seen a 10% growth in registered officials and a 45% growth coaches and since 2019, with currently over 1,700 women and girls coaches and officials, shaping the future of the game.

Female Hockey Days: Inspiring the Next Generation

On February 1st, Hockey Alberta hosted the 8th Annual Female Hockey Day in Medicine Hat, Alberta. This annual event has become a Province-wide celebration of girls and women’s hockey, with host communities hosting ‘try hockey’ and ‘mentorship’ events to coaching & officiating clinics.  

With support from grants provided by Hockey Alberta and the Hockey Alberta Foundation in support of Every Kid Every Community grants, 11 Female Hockey Day events were hosted across the province, engaging over 1000 participants in skill development and more with mentorship and celebration of the female game. Edmonton took things a step further, officially declaring February as Female Hockey Month in Edmonton, further solidifying its commitment to growing the game. 

Making History: The PWHL Takeover Tour

The Professional Women’s Hockey League made its debut in Alberta at Rogers Place on February 16th, where the Ottawa Charge faced off against the Toronto Sceptres in front of a sold-out crowd of 17,518 fans. The Sceptres secured a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory, marking a historic moment for professional women’s hockey in Alberta. The event was a homecoming for a number of Alberta Built Alumni took center stage. Current players: Stephanie Marowski, Emerance Maschmeyer (Bruiderheim), Danielle Serdachny (Edmonton), and Jessica Kondas (Calgary)—took to the ice, inspiring the next generation of female players.

Behind the bench, Head Coach Carla Macleod (Calgary) continued to make her mark in her second season leading the PWHL’s Ottawa Charge, bringing her signature “blue-collar” Alberta hockey style to the world. Read how Macleod is bringing “blue-collar” Alberta hockey to the world.

Adding to the Alberta Presence at the game, Lacey Senuk (St. Albert) was officiating. After high school, Senuk joined a women’s league in St. Albert, where she was unexpectedly recruited to become a referee—a path that would lead her to the game’s highest levels.

Success Beyond Home Ice

The AFHL has not only developed elite players but has also created pathways for post-secondary opportunities. Over 330 athletes from the AFHL have gone on to play at universities and colleges across Canada and the U.S. Many alumni have represented Team Alberta at the National Championships and Canada Games, won USport and NCAA National Championships, earned World Championship medals with Team Canada, and are now competing in the PWHL. Serdachny, in particular, continues to shine on the international stage, scoring the golden gold at the 2024 IIHF Women’s World Championship and finishing the tournament with two goals and four points.

LAS VEGAS, NV, USA - Alberta was well represented at this year’s U18 AA Presidents’ Day Weekend Tournament from February 14-17 in Las Vegas, as not one, but two teams – the Lakeland Panthers U18 AA and the Trails West U18 BC2 RED – skated their way to the finals. Both teams demonstrated exceptional skill and determination against top-tier competition from across North America.

Trails West U18 BC2 RED Team – Silver Medal

The Trails West U18 BC2 RED team battled hard all weekend, proving they can compete with some of the best teams across North America. They navigated a competitive round robin with three wins and one loss.

After their strong showing, Trails West advanced to the finals, where they faced off against their fellow Albertan team, the Lakeland Panthers.

Reflecting on the tournament, Team Manager Darcie Komonoski claims, "Our team is a community Hockey BC2 team from Calgary and we were bumped up to play a AA level in Las Vegas. I was quite concerned about the bump, but our coaches did their due diligence and researched these teams for hours before agreeing to the new level. We ended up coming in second place out of five attending teams and lost in the gold final to the AA team from Northern Alberta. Our boys played amazing and challenged their opponents until the very end. They were extremely proud of their play, as they should’ve been."

Playing against strong competition made for an exciting experience. "The first three round robin games were against teams from Tampa Bay, California, and Alaska. It was terrific to play teams from afar with such size, speed, and skill, and for us to do so well." Komonoski explains.

Beyond the rink, the team found ways to bond and create unforgettable memories. Komonoski organized a team event to tour Las Vegas’s new Allegiant football stadium, “It was a fantastic tour and the boys enjoyed it immensely. The Las Vegas Raiders Moto was ’JUST WIN BABY’ - so that motto quickly became adopted by our team for the remainder of the weekend. In fact, in the media room, Coach Mark got up and gave an inspirational speech to the team, which everyone loved. I’ve included a couple team photos and that interview from the stadium."

The trip wasn’t just about hockey—it was about the full experience. "Our team bonded even more on this five-day trip with a tour of Las Vegas in the Limo party bus on their first night. They shared meals at Shake Shack and Chick-fil-A on the strip, they hit the roller coaster at New York, New York and enjoyed some well-earned independence exploring this incredible city on their own. This is our second year in a row attending the night’s hockey tournament in Vegas, and as manager for next year, I plan to book the same tournament again!"

Lakeland Panthers U18 AA Team – President’s Day Champions

The Lakeland Panthers continued their winning streak throughout the tournament, going undefeated against top-tier opponents. Their journey to the championship included victories over teams from Alaska, California, Florida, and Calgary. In the championship game, the Panthers showcased their dominance with a decisive win over Trails West, bringing home the President’s Day banner to Canada.

Coach Brinson Pasichnuk shares “the hockey tournament went amazing. For some of these boys it was their first time leaving Canada, so it was so cool to see the teams’ eyes light up with awe walking down the Vegas strip”. Pasichnuk explains that the trip was more than the experience on the ice “We were always hanging out together whether that was at a team dinner or exploring Vegas. That’s what made this trip so cool, we all got to experience it together and to top it off with a gold medal win just made it all the more special for not only the players but also for the coaches and parents. This was a once in a lifetime trip, one with memories that will last a lifetime”.

Coach Brinson Pasichnuk reflected on the tournament, sharing, "The hockey tournament was an incredible experience. For some of these boys, it was their first time leaving Canada, and seeing their eyes light up in awe as we walked down the Vegas strip was unforgettable."

But for Pasichnuk, the trip was about more than just hockey. "We were always together—whether it was at a team dinner or exploring Vegas. That’s what made this trip so special. Experiencing it as a team and then capping it off with a gold medal win, made it even more meaningful—not just for the players, but for the coaches and parents as well. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, filled with memories that will last forever."

On the ice, the boys put on an outstanding performance, finishing with a perfect 5-0 record. The final game was the most thrilling, with a gold medal on the line. "We came out strong, stuck to our game plan, and delivered when it mattered most."

More than just a team, Pasichnuk emphasized the values that define the group: "We take pride in being a brotherhood, always striving to be not just great players, but great teammates and even better human beings."

Having two Alberta teams reach the finals at such a competitive tournament speaks volumes about the talent and dedication of these young athletes. Both the Panthers and the Trails West players, coaches, and supporters should be proud of their achievements.

RED DEER – The 4th annual Para Hockey Tournament took place at the G.H. Dawe Community Centre on February 22-23, bringing together teams from across Alberta for a celebration of sport, community, and inclusivity.

Divisions included Junior, Intermediate C, and Intermediate B with participating teams:

• Junior Division: Calgary Venom, Medicine Hat Hounds Jr, PSA Blades, Team Jigger Jr

• Intermediate C: Calgary Stingers, Edmonton Impact, Medicine Hat Hounds Orange, EASA Storm C, Medicine Hat Hounds White, Team Jigger

• Intermediate B: Calgary Scorpions, EASA Storm B

Para Hockey is a sport open to all ages and abilities, with Alberta’s season running from October through April. It is a sport everyone can play.

“This tournament, along with the one held in October at the G.H. Dawe Community Centre, offers a fantastic opportunity for clubs across Alberta to come together and compete," said Cassandra Campbell, Coordinator, Growth and Retention with Hockey Alberta. "Much of the Para Hockey season involves practice, and competitions are typically tournament-style. Since many tournaments take place out of province, having two central tournaments allows programs to compete without the need for extensive travel.”

Coach Ray Wasdal, also the Program Coordinator for Sledge Hockey in Red Deer and Central Alberta, praised the event. “The tournament was great, once again. The primary organizer was Sharon Veeneman from the Edmonton Adaptive Sports Association, and she along with others from that organization did a fantastic job. The support we receive from Hockey Alberta through Cassie Campbell was also very important for the success of the tournament. The referees did a great job, and the G. H. Dawe operations staff were very helpful throughout.”  

Beyond competition, the weekend fostered community connections. “These tournaments are very important first and foremost for the players because it provides an opportunity to play teams from other regions. That doesn’t happen as often as we would like due to challenges associated with travel, etc. It also provides an excellent networking opportunity for all the teams, managers, coaches, and parents to share experiences and to find ways to further support each other” Wasdal added. "Events like this allow us to showcase para hockey to a wide range of people so they can witness what an amazing and inclusive sport it is.”

The weekend also featured a Canadian Tire Jumpstart-sponsored Try-It Event, highlighting para hockey’s accessibility. "At the Try It Event, sponsored by the Canadian Tire Jumpstart Program celebrating their 20th anniversary, we had a 4-year-old girl, and an 85-year-old man participate! It was a wonderful example of the broad range of participants that sledge hockey can attract and accommodate, as well as the overall inclusive nature of the sport. During these tournaments it is always heart-warming to see the smiles on all the faces of everyone involved (players, parents, family, friends, coaches, and managers)”, Wasdal shared.

Tara Chisholm, Provincial Program Director with the Paralympic Sports Association, reflected on the tournament’s success. “The tournament was really great overall. Teams from across Alberta were able to gather and play against one another in a jamboree-style event where there were no medal games, so everyone could relax a little bit and just enjoy one game at a time! It was really a celebration of all the hard work the clubs have been putting in throughout the year.”

A standout moment for Chisholm was, “when a player on our Medicine Hat team not only scored his first goal but went on to score his first hat trick! This player was in tears after each goal, and the whole team was erupting every time he put it in the back of the net. He never had the opportunity to play hockey growing up due to his disability and now seeing him as an adult having these personal successes over the weekend was just as exciting for his teammates as it was for him.”

Campbell highlighted the importance of accessible facilities and the growth of para hockey in Alberta, “In March 2023, renovations at the Dawe Centre added two accessible arenas, allowing Hockey Alberta to host its first two Para Hockey tournaments at the facility during the 2023-2024 season. The clubs have continued to organize these tournaments this season, providing athletes with opportunities to compete in Alberta and showcasing the growth of both the programs and the athletes. Congratulations to everyone involved for their hard work in making these tournaments a success.”

With Team Jigger Sledge Hockey Association set to host the next tournament this fall, Alberta’s para hockey community continues to grow through collaboration, competition, and a shared love for the game.

RED DEER - The AFHL is excited to announce the expansion of elite female hockey opportunities in Alberta for the 2025-2026 season. Over the past five seasons, girls’ hockey has experienced remarkable growth, prompting the Elite Female Committee to recognize the need for additional teams in areas where this growth is exceptional. These new teams are part of a comprehensive strategic review that considered association growth, sustainability, grassroots initiatives, and feedback from elite committee task groups.

Hockey Alberta’s Elite Female Hockey Committee is pleased to announce the addition of the following new host Minor Hockey Associations (MHAs) for the 2025-26 season:

U13 AA - Addition of 2 Teams

1 in Cochrane

1 in Fort McMurray

U15 AA - Addition of 1 Team

1 in Camrose

The establishment of these new teams is the result of a three-year effort by Hockey Alberta, during which they assessed the success of the Elite Female Hockey Model and determined the eligibility of new associations to host Elite Teams. The committee has closely monitored the recent surge in female hockey participation and has evaluated the available pathways for players to advance within Alberta’s female hockey system.

“With the rapid growth of female hockey in Alberta, the future is bright for the AFHL. These new teams not only reflect the surge in participation but also provide more opportunities for female players to develop their skills, rise to higher levels, and be part of the continued growth of female hockey in our province. The success and visibility of the current programs, along with growing professional opportunities with the PWHL and Canadian Women’s National Team, are inspiring a new generation of elite female players, and we are excited that the AFHL remains the league of choice for these athletes to develop and compete."

The Elite Female Hockey Model was launched in the 2016-17 season after a three-year review by Hockey Alberta in 2013. It established provincial standards for the number of teams at each level, streamlined the U18 AAA division for better competition, and introduced the AA system for appropriate skill development. This framework supports player growth from grassroots to U13, U15, and U18 AA programs, leading to Team Alberta, Team Canada, and post-secondary opportunities.

Since the implementation of the new model in 2016, registration numbers for female players in Alberta have increased by 32% overall. This includes a 36% increase at the U15 level, a 52% increase at U13, and a 62% increase at U11.

The AFHL and its members have successfully developed and placed over 330 athletes in post-secondary institutions across Canada and the US. Our alumni have represented Team Alberta at the National Championships and Canada Games, won National Championships (USport & NCAA), received medals at the World Championships representing Team Canada, and have been selected to compete in the PWHL.

The Elite Female Hockey Committee is working with all host MHAs to finalize program and league operations for the upcoming season. We will also continue to review the structure and alignment of the AFHL, considering potential changes and further expansion for the 2026-27 season.
