As a wrap-up to the 2020-21 season, Hockey Alberta is featuring four outstanding coaches as recipients of the Coach of the Month recognition - sponsored by Players Bench Team Apparel. These coaches were nominated by parents, players, and fellow coaches due to their exceptional leadership, initiative, and innovation during the difficult season.
Today Hockey Alberta is pleased to recognize Brad McCoy of Fort McMurray.
FORT MCMURRAY - Brad McCoy was an Assistant Coach with the U13 AA Fort McMurray Bouchier Junior Oil Barons. This was his first year with the team after coaching at a variety of minor hockey levels for the past 15 years.
As a coach, Brad went above and beyond for the players on his team during the long pause of the past season. Throughout the year, he kept the players engaged by sending daily dryland challenges and coaching the kids on sports performance, nutrition, and sleep. When the team was on the ice, Brad was always ready with a plan that ensured the players were still being challenged and learning new skills.
"Brad’s dedication as a coach has shown that he truly cares about the well-being of the youth and the success of the entire team," said the parent who submitted the nomination. "Brad and the team provided a positive and healthy distraction from the overall stresses of the pandemic this season."
As a dentist with five kids who all participate in competitive sports, Brad is limited with his spare time, but he still finds time to be a coach and volunteer for baseball, gymnastics, dance, and cheer on top of being a hockey coach. Living in Fort McMurray through the fires, floods, and now COVID-19, he has learned just how important being part of the community is.
"Fort Mac is kind of special because a lot of us come here from all over Canada and beyond to work. Oftentimes your family IS the community," said Brad. "Coaching is a fantastic way to give back to your community, and also an incredible way to receive from your community. Coaching is not always easy and not always fun, but it has always been rewarding!"
