RED DEER - Hockey Alberta’s January Coach of the Month, sponsored by Players Bench Team Apparel, is Shawn Van Buuren of the Coaldale Cobras Peewee 2 and Coaldale Bantam teams.
Shawn is currently head coach of the Coaldale Cobras Peewee 2 and an assistant coach of the Coaldale Cobras Bantam team. He has been coaching hockey for eleven years, and also coaches baseball in the spring.
"Shawn is great with the kids, finding a balance between between being firm, and also creating an environment where the kids can learn, grow, and flourish," said a fellow coach who nominated Shawn. "He has taken the initiative to better both himself and the rest of the coaching team by always coming prepared with a plan in mind and consulting with a Coach Mentor to grow and learn."
Shawn plays hockey himself, and also enjoys camping and dirt biking with his family during the summer.
"I enjoy watching each player’s progression from the beginning of the season to the end and how their love for the sport grows." said Shawn. "My goal is to grow the kid’s love for the game by having fun, but still being competitive."
The Coach of the Month award is presented every month during the Minor Hockey season, based on nominations submitted to Hockey Alberta.
One minor hockey coach will be selected each month from October through March and will receive a coaching package from Players Bench Team Apparel valued at over $500, which includes a helmet, gloves, track suit, coach bag, puck bag, rink board, and coaching resources.
