Hockey Alberta's Regional Centres are intended to provide a player/coach
development resource specific to certain regions of the province. Currently Hockey Alberta has three
operational Regional Centres; Regional Centre - North in Grande Prairie, Regional Centre - Central in Red
Deer, and Regional Centre - South in Lethbridge.
PURPOSE
Athlete Development – The
core of our business is athlete focused, from elite to developmental to grassroots. Through this
strategy all three levels will be addressed and although the needs are different and roles for supporting
these athletes change which each level, the regional strategy can facilitate through quality services and
programs and build a stronger hockey/sport system and this accomplished through a long term player
development and partnership approach with in the region.
Leadership Development – Can be
defined by all stakeholders that support/lead the athletes. Coaches, administrators, parents and
mentors all full under this area. This is a huge area that will support the athlete through education,
mentoring, development and learning of this athlete support network. This will be accomplished through
clinics, training, seminars, resource centre, etc.
Promotion of the Game –
Promoting the game hockey in each region is critical. Growing the game, sharing the history of
the game is all part of the regional strategy and keeping hockey as the game of choice from cradle to grave,
regardless of skill level. Recruiting and retaining athletes for life is the over
goal.
Operational Focus - will be
on the core national and provincial hockey development programs, Future leaders of hockey, grassroots and
growing the game, emerging athlete and the long term athlete development, online and web based training
between centres, practicum and student leadership development and a hockey resource centre and library to
support development.
Program areas are Coach Development (NCCP coaching program, Checking Skills
Clinic, Mentorship, Special events), Player Development (Skill Camps, Skills Testing, Jamborees, Skill
Academies), TEAM ALBERTA Development (Arctic Winter Games, Alberta Cup, Alberta Winter Games and Regional
Development camps) and Leadership Development (team selection and player evaluation, coach selection and
